Privacy Policy
This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what data ShowMyIP processes when you use our tools, why, how long we keep it, and the rights you have over it. We aim to be honest and specific rather than vague.
Last updated: August 12, 2026
The short version
- You do not need an account - we don't collect names, emails, or passwords to use the tools.
- We process the input you submit (such as an IP address, domain, or URL) only to return your result.
- Preferences like your light/dark theme are stored in your browser (localStorage), never on our servers.
- We do not sell your personal data.
- Advertising and analytics scripts load only in our production environment, and we use a consent notice for visitors in the EU.
What we collect and why
Tool input you submit
When you run a tool, the value you enter - an IP address, domain, URL, hostname, or text - is sent to our server (or queried against an external authoritative source) for the sole purpose of computing and returning the result you asked for. Many tools (encoders, hashers, formatters, generators) run purely on the input you provide and make no external request.
Your IP address and connection details
Like virtually every website, our web server receives your IP address and standard request metadata (user agent, requested URL, timestamp) as a normal part of serving a page over HTTP. We use this to deliver results, to keep the service secure and available, and to apply rate limiting that prevents scraping and abuse. We do not use it to build an advertising or identity profile of you.
Cookies and local storage
- Session cookie (
PHPSESSID) - a strictly necessary cookie set by our server to maintain your session and protect form submissions against cross-site request forgery (CSRF). It is configured asHttpOnly,SameSite=Lax, andSecureover HTTPS. It is not used for tracking. - localStorage (your device only) - optional preferences such as your light/dark theme are saved in your browser's localStorage. This data stays on your device, is never transmitted to us, and you can clear it at any time by clearing your browser data.
- Advertising & analytics cookies - see the next section. These are present only in our live production environment.
Advertising and analytics
We are transparent that this is an ad-supported site - the free tools are paid for by advertising. In our production environment the following third-party scripts may load:
- Our advertising partner Mediavine (script served from
scripts.mediavine.com), which places the ads you see and works with a number of advertising partners. These may set advertising/marketing cookies or similar identifiers and may use them to show you more relevant ads. See Mediavine's Privacy Policy. - Analytics measurement (Google Analytics 4) to understand aggregate, non-identifying usage of the site - which pages are visited and roughly where visitors come from.
For visitors in the European Union, a GDPR consent notice is displayed and cookies are grouped into strictly necessary, performance (e.g. JSESSIONID), analytics (e.g. Google Analytics), and marketing (e.g. advertising) categories so you can make a choice. These third parties are governed by their own privacy policies, including Mediavine's and Google's.
Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)
The Website works with Mediavine to manage third-party interest-based advertising appearing on the Website. Mediavine serves content and advertisements when you visit the Website, which may use first and third-party cookies. A cookie is a small text file which is sent to your computer or mobile device (referred to in this policy as a “device”) by the web server so that a website can remember some information about your browsing activity on the Website.
First party cookies are created by the website that you are visiting. A third-party cookie is frequently used in behavioral advertising and analytics and is created by a domain other than the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies, tags, pixels, beacons and other similar technologies (collectively, “Tags”) may be placed on the Website to monitor interaction with advertising content and to target and optimize advertising. Each internet browser has functionality so that you can block both first and third-party cookies and clear your browser's cache. The "help" feature of the menu bar on most browsers will tell you how to stop accepting new cookies, how to receive notification of new cookies, how to disable existing cookies and how to clear your browser's cache. For more information about cookies and how to disable them, you can consult the information at All About Cookies.
Without cookies you may not be able to take full advantage of the Website content and features. Please note that rejecting cookies does not mean that you will no longer see ads when you visit our Site. In the event you opt-out, you will still see non-personalized advertisements on the Website.
The Website collects the following data using a cookie when serving personalized ads:
- IP Address
- Operating System type
- Operating System version
- Device Type
- Language of the website
- Web browser type
- Email (in hashed form)
Mediavine Partners (companies listed below with whom Mediavine shares data) may also use this data to link to other end user information the partner has independently collected to deliver targeted advertisements. Mediavine Partners may also separately collect data about end users from other sources, such as advertising IDs or pixels, and link that data to data collected from Mediavine publishers in order to provide interest-based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers and apps. This data includes usage data, cookie information, device information, information about interactions between users and advertisements and websites, geolocation data, traffic data, and information about a visitor's referral source to a particular website. Mediavine Partners may also create unique IDs to create audience segments, which are used to provide targeted advertising.
If you would like more information about this practice and to know your choices to opt-in or opt-out of this data collection, please visit National Advertising Initiative opt out page. You may also visit Digital Advertising Alliance website and Network Advertising Initiative website to learn more information about interest-based advertising. You may download the AppChoices app at Digital Advertising Alliance's AppChoices app to opt out in connection with mobile apps, or use the platform controls on your mobile device to opt out.
For specific information about Mediavine Partners, the data each collects and their data collection and privacy policies, please visit Mediavine Partners.
How long we keep data
Tool input is used to produce your result and is not retained as part of a personal profile. Standard web server and security logs (which may include IP addresses) are kept only as long as needed for security, abuse prevention, and operational troubleshooting, then rotated or discarded. Data stored in your browser's localStorage persists on your device until you clear it.
We do not sell your data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not share your lookups with third parties for their own marketing. Data is shared only where strictly necessary to operate the service - for example, querying an authoritative DNS, WHOIS, or geolocation source to fulfill the lookup you requested, or serving ads/analytics as described above.
Your rights (GDPR & CCPA)
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you, or request a copy of it.
- Request correction or deletion of your personal data.
- Object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent for cookies at any time.
- Opt out of the “sale” or sharing of personal information (we do not sell it in any case).
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Because we don't require accounts, we typically hold very little that identifies you personally. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below and we'll respond in line with applicable law.
Children's privacy
ShowMyIP is a general-purpose utility site and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, please contact us so we can address it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site evolves or as laws change. When we do, we'll revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be reflected here, so it's worth checking back periodically.
