showmyip.com has added the ability to lookup IP Address information over a SOAP interface. Pass in an IP Address in the "lookup_ip" parameter (eg. 123.450.20.128), or a Host Name in the "lookup_host" parameter (eg. rocketbooster.com) and get returned up to 16 fields of geographically relevant information about that lookup address.

showmyip.com allows the ability to lookup IP Address information in VoiceXML format, for those with voice-enabled browsers. Pass in a lookup IP Address with the ?ip= parameter (eg. http://www.showmyip.com/voicexml?ip=123.450.20.128), or a Host Name with the ?host= or ?site= parameter (eg. http://www.showmyip.com/voicexml?host=rocketbooster.com) and get returned the Country name, State/Province name, and for subscribers, the City name for that lookup address.

showmyip.com now identifies lookup IP Addresses as being located in the EU European Union. This is for all lookup types except for the SOAP interface, and VoiceXML format, both of which will be upgraded to include this information before the end of 2004.

Updated SOAP interfaces

showmyip.com has updated SOAP interfaces now available at http://www.showmyip.com/soap2008/ for your own IP Address properties, and at http://www.showmyip.com/soap2008/lookup/ for looking up any other IP Address properties. The new WSDL files are at http://www.showmyip.com/soap2008/callshowmyip.wsdl and http://www.showmyip.com/soap2008/callshowmyip_lookup.wsdl respectively. "TOR_DETECTION" and "RBL_DNSBL_STATUS" are 2 new elements returned by both services, consistent with our XML, RSS, and HTML interfaces, and soon to be added to our simple text interface. TOR_DETECTION provides real-time detection data on whether an IP Address is part of the Tor network (see https://www.torproject.org/ for more details). RBL_DNSBL_STATUS provides real-time data on whether the IP Address is listed as a blacklist/blocklist on the spamhaus.org, sorbs.net, uceprotect.net and other blacklist/blocklist providers. Both interface names have been changed to add "call" as a prefix in order to be more compliant with recent developments in the SOAP world. Also, the callshowmyip_lookup.wsdl no longer includes the optional DDNS registered name parameter in the lookupRequest, but does add 3 more parameters that will be made use of sometime soon: lookup_iplong can be specified instead of lookup_ip or lookup_host if the "long" IP Address is known; get_field_names can be specified to include specific element field names to be returned; lookup_options can be specified to further control the returned data.

Tor network presence history now available

showmyip.com has now added Tor network presence history data to show when an IP Address has been part of the Tor network over the previous 7 days. This presence history data shows date and time, actual bandwidth, Tor software version, uptime, Exit Policy and more. As well, subscribers to our IP Address Lookup service get 2 additional features: 31 days of presence history rather than 7 days, and the ability to specify any date to check. German police, or anyone else, can now go to pickaproxy.com, select their country of choice, and from the list of Tor network nodes in that country, perform a Lookup on that IP Address to learn when in the previous 7 or 31 days that IP Address was active in the Tor network. By adding a &date=20080131 parameter to this lookup, for example, a subscriber could get this presence history data to show from January 1-31, 2008. Presence history data is also checked for all IP Addresses that are not currently a Tor network node. Previously if an IP Address was not currently a Tor network node, it would simply be indicated as such. Now it will be identified if it was part of the Tor network in the previous 7 or 31 days. These new features are currently implemented in the HTML and XML interfaces on showmyip.com, and will be added to our RSS, SOAP and simple text interfaces in the short term.

IP Address Lookups by Tor nickname and fingerprint

Interesting discovery today when adding support for IP Address Lookups on Tor node nicknames and fingerprints. Anyone can now do a lookup with node= or fingerprint= specified as a URL parameter, as in the following examples: http://www.showmyip.com/?node=peactime or http://www.ippages.com/?fingerprint=2f63b6febe2c1fdddef2dd850b77b88c05711cf9. Previously you could only do lookups by IP Address, Host name, or "long" IP number as in: http://www.showmyip.com/?ip=75.125.82.140 or http://www.ippages.com/?host=adobe.com or http://www.lookupip.com/?ipn=1266504332. When I ran some tests on node=peacetime I found, by way of the new Tor network presence history data, that there were quite a number of nicknames using the same IP Address 128.31.0.34 over at mit.edu: peacetime, moria500, moria1, moria2, moria1000 and maybe more. What the heck are you doing over there Nick, arma and Roger? :)

Change your "proxy" settings to tryout.pickaproxy.com and specify port 8123 to get a random selection of proxies that changes roughly every 10 minutes. Use us.pickaproxy.com and port 8125 to get a strictly USA-based set of proxies, uk.pickaproxy.com and port 8126 for the UK, fr.pickaproxy.com port 8129 for France, ru.pickaproxy.com port 8130 for Russia, cn.pickaproxy.com port 8131 for China, or ca.pickaproxy.com port 8132 for Canada.

One of the concerns with using pickaproxy.com as your proxy server is that the information you see in your browser, and that you send to web sites, can be monitored more easily than if you did not use a proxy server. The connection between your computer and pickaproxy.com is a single point of access, and if we were so inclined we could watch the content coming and going. This is true for much of the internet in general, and for any proxy server, and especially true in some countries such as those singled out by Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans fronti�res) in their November 2005 article The 15 Enemies of the Internet.

We are not doing any such monitoring, first off, and have no plans to do so. But we are now offering a way for you to secure this data flowing between you and pickaproxy.com. This can be done by installing and configuring the open source "stunnel" software on your computer. stunnel has been available for many year, and works by using OpenSSL to encrypt all communication between your computer and pickaproxy.com. You then configure your "proxy" settings and your "stunnel" settings as follows:

rather than "tryout.pickaproxy.com" and port "8123" you configure your proxy settings to be "localhost" and port "8100", and your stunnel settings to be "accept = 8100" and "connect = tryout.pickaproxy.com:7123"

rather than "us.pickaproxy.com" and port "8125" you configure your proxy settings to be "localhost" and port "8100", and your stunnel settings to be "accept = 8100" and "connect = us.pickaproxy.com:7125"

rather than "uk.pickaproxy.com" and port "8126" you configure your proxy as localhost port 8100, and your stunnel as accept = 8100 and connect = uk.pickaproxy.com:7126

rather than "fr.pickaproxy.com" and port "8129" you configure your proxy as localhost port 8100, and your stunnel as accept = 8100 and connect = fr.pickaproxy.com:7129

rather than "ru.pickaproxy.com" and port "8130" you configure your proxy as localhost port 8100, and your stunnel as accept = 8100 and connect = ru.pickaproxy.com:7130

stunnel is available for download from http://www.stunnel.org/download/binaries.html and at this time we are not providing support or assistance with installing or configuring stunnel, but we will eventually offer this service. I will say that stunnel configuration is not that difficult, and is done by making changes to the stunnel.conf file.
